Before you reach the deathclaws there are a ton of signs saying to turn back or die, and there is even someone on the main road that outright says if you go any farther you will die. Of course most areas like that give you a bit of warning and a chance to avoid them. There is even a challenge called Overkill which requires you to kill normal animals with the Fat Man.Įarly game there are areas that you should AVOID AT ALL COSTS! For example just northeast of Groodsprings is an area with deathclaws (for those new to Fallout deathclaws are killing machines that are a threat to even high level players and are therefore greatly feared) in it. For example by the time you get your hands on a Fat Man and plenty of ammo for it, you will still be able to fight those same geckos with more or less the same stats. This leads to you fighting enemies stronger then you at times, and far weaker then you later on.
See the thing is that unlike like Fallout 3 there is more of a limit to the auto-scaling of threats. Chances are, you were using a varmint rifle that was in extremely poor condition.
